For our weekend-long, overnight Ocean Defenders Program, we welcomed 10 BIPOC girls and gender minorities ages 15-18 to live aboard Field School’s R/V Garvin for the weekend, learning about marine conservation, trying new outdoor exploration skills, participating in a shark research expedition (we caught a blacknose and nurse shark!), and being mentored by diverse women in science!
This program was hosted by Terranaut Club in collaboration with Minorities in Shark Science (MISS), the American Shark Conservancy, and Field School. Funding was provided from Hadley Wickham from R Studio and an 11th Hour Racing Grant from the Schmidt Family Foundation. We thank all of these organizations for supporting this immersive and meaningful hands-on learning experience for a fantastic group of youth!
